It slices. It dices. And it’s the cutest little paring knife you ever did see.

Kuhn Rikon 4-Inch Nonstick Colori Paring Knife

Once upon a time, a gal gave my friend, Sara, a spatula for her birthday. Mind you, it was a top-of-the-line orange (I think) spatula, but it wasn’t packaged with anything else – no bowl, no brownie mix, just a spatula.

Fast forward 10 years, and I was gifted a kitchen knife. (In fact, it’s orange.) I will never again underestimate the thoughtfulness of a singular kitchen accessory gift. When it’s good, it’s good. And folks, the Kuhn Rikon paring knives are good! (FYI - Kuhn Rikon is an 80-year-old Swiss cookware brand.)

I’ve never paid much attention to knives. I amassed a collection of hand-me-downs from mom’s kitchen and several Usinger (of sausage fame) “steak knives,” but nothing fancy. And I’ve never owned a knife set or block! I would usually just reach for something that looked like it would cut what needed to be cut and get on with it.

But now, nine times out of 10, I reach for this little orange slicer. I don’t really care what a paring knife is supposed to be used for. (A bread knife is still the way to go for slicing bread, though!)

First, the Kuhn Rikon paring knife is super sharp. It helps that it comes with its own little safety sheath, so the blade won’t get banged up in a drawer. I’ve had the same one knife for two years now and have never even thought about needing to sharpen it. Second, the blade has a non-stick coating, which makes it glide through tomatoes, onions – and even baking chocolate – with ease! Third, it just looks fun! How can you not appreciate a pop of color in your hand (and no, I don’t mean blood!) when you’re finely chopping garlic cloves for the third time in a week?!

The paring knife is widely available for about $10. Not bad for an awesome knife! You should be able to grab your favorite color at your local Bed Bath & Beyond or Williams-Sonoma. Otherwise, Amazon.com or an array of online cookware stores sell the knives.

So there you have it, my first review. I hope it was helpful. If you’re serious about knives and you’re concerned because I missed an important note, let me know. This is the first time I’ve ever reviewed a knife….
